Guidance published on Best Available Techniques (BAT) for Timber Treatment Operations

The UK IPC Regulators Group recently issued interpretational guidance on the BAT conclusions for our sector as set out in the EU BREF Note published in December.

This will be used by SEPA, the Environment Agency and/or local authorities when determining new permit applications and reviewing existing permits for wood treatment operations.

Under the EU Industrial Emissions Directive (IED), timber treatment activities with plants having a capacity of more than 75m3 per day, (excluding antisapstain treatment), are required to operate in accordance with a regulated permit.

The EU Best Available Techniques reference document (BREF) was published by the EU on 9th December 2020.

Importantly this was during the UK EU exit transition period, meaning that the UK is obliged to implement the BAT conclusions as follows:
